Both ends are counted: the day you start and the day it is due are days you can work on it. If the deadline is nine in the morning, tick the due date itself as a day you are busy and the count drops by one. Everything above is division of the days you told it about, with no assumption about how long any part of the work takes — that estimate is yours to make, and the stages are only there to tell you the date by which each slice of it has to be behind you.
A calendar tells you how far away the due date is. It does not tell you how much of that distance you can use, and those are different numbers by a wide margin. Between here and a Friday deadline there may be two shifts at work, a match on Saturday, and a Sunday you have never once opened a laptop on. This planner asks which of the intervening days are genuinely yours, subtracts the rest, and only then divides what is left into stages.
Start on a Monday with the piece due a fortnight later, count both ends, and the calendar span is fourteen days. Tick Saturday and Sunday as days you never work and four of them come off immediately, leaving ten. Split that into four stages and the legs come out as three days, three days, two days and two days: a quarter of the work behind you by the third working day, half by the sixth, three quarters by the eighth.
The leftover days go to the earliest legs rather than the last ones, which is deliberate. Work pulled forward becomes slack at the end, and slack at the end is the only thing that survives contact with a printer that will not print.
Three figures are shown beneath the plan and they always add back to the calendar span: the days lost to weekdays you never study on, the days lost to specific dates you blocked out, and the days you are actually left with. A date that falls on a weekday you already excluded is counted once, against the weekday, so nothing is deducted twice.
Both ends of the window count as usable. The day you begin is a day you can work, and so is the due date itself. If the hand-in is nine in the morning, add that date to the blocked list and the count drops by one, which is more honest than the tool guessing at what time of day a deadline falls.
Three situations get a plain sentence instead of a schedule. A due date already in the past returns how many days ago it went, because dividing remaining work across negative time produces nonsense that looks like arithmetic. A window in which every single day has been excluded says so rather than dividing by zero. And a window with fewer working days than stages warns that at least one stage has no day of its own, which is the tool telling you the piece is now a single sitting rather than a project.
What you will not find is a template claiming that an essay is thirty per cent reading and fifteen per cent proofreading. No such split exists as a fact about writing, so the stages here are fractions of the work rather than named phases, and deciding what counts as half done stays with the person who knows the assignment.
The point of a backwards plan is that it fails early. A schedule built forwards from today feels comfortable until the last week, when the arithmetic finally catches up; one built backwards from the deadline puts the bad news in front of you on day one, while there is still time to negotiate an extension, drop a section, or clear a weekend.
So the number to watch is not the finishing date, which is fixed and was never in question. It is the date on the first stage. If a quarter of the work has to be finished by Thursday and Thursday is tomorrow, that is the tool telling you something about the size of the piece rather than about your character, and it is telling you now instead of on the last night.
Because for most hand-ins it genuinely is one: a midnight submission leaves the whole day available. Where the deadline falls early in the morning, block that date out and the count corrects itself, which beats the tool assuming a time it cannot know.
No, and it does not pretend to. Holidays differ by country, region and year, and a built-in list quietly rots the moment it ships. Blocking the dates yourself takes a few seconds and is right for where you actually are.
Because the proportions would be invented. A lab report, a translation and a dissertation chapter divide their effort in wildly different ways, and a number picked to look plausible would be guesswork with a percentage sign attached to it.
The plan stops and explains, rather than returning zero days a stage or an infinite daily workload. Blocking every day in the window is a real thing to type, and a tool that answered it with a division by zero would deserve none of your trust.
