Exactly the target weight
Kilogram and pound sets are kept apart on purpose and nothing is converted between them. A 20 kg bar is not a 45 lb bar — 45 lb is 20.41 kg — so a total worked out in one set cannot be built from the other. The plates offered above are only the ones you say you own, and the answer never asks for more of a size than you have.
Most weights do not exist. The finest step this set can take is a pair of its smallest plate, which is 0.5 kg, so anything between two steps rounds to the nearest total that can actually be built, and the result says which way and by how much. Competition collars weigh 2.5 kg each under IPF rules, which is 5 kg of bar weight that is easy to forget.
Half the arithmetic errors on a gym floor start with forgetting what is already loaded. A competition barbell is 20 kg, and the International Powerlifting Federation rulebook also makes collars compulsory at 2.5 kg each, so an empty competition setup weighs 25 kg before a single disc goes on. Enter the total you want, choose the bar and collars you are actually using, and this works out what goes on each side of it.
Discs come in pairs, one for each sleeve, so the smallest step any setup can take is twice its smallest disc. On a rack that bottoms out at 1.25 kg discs, the bar moves in 2.5 kg jumps, and 141 kg is not a weight that exists on it. Rather than rounding silently, this reports the nearest total that can genuinely be built, says whether it lands over or under, and by how much.
That is also why the pair counts are editable. A loader that assumes an unlimited rack will happily call for six pairs of 25s from a gym that owns four, and the answer looks right until you are standing at the bar with nothing left to put on it. Only discs you say you own ever appear in the answer, and never more of them than you declared.
Nothing here converts one set into the other, because the conversion produces loads nobody can build. A 45 lb bar is 20.41 kg, not 20 kg; a pair of 45s is not a pair of 20s. Choose the set your gym stocks and the answer stays inside it, in whole discs that exist.
The kilogram sizes are the ones the IPF permits — 25, 20, 15, 10, 5, 2.5 and 1.25 kg, with quarter and half kilogram discs allowed for record attempts. The pound sizes have no federation behind them at all; they are the commercial set found in American gyms, offered because that is what is on the rack, not because a rulebook says so.
Grabbing the heaviest disc that still fits is the obvious method and it fails on a limited rack. Suppose you need 40 kg a side and own one 25 and two 20s. Take the 25 first and you are stuck 15 short with nothing that fits; two 20s were the answer all along. This searches every combination the declared stock can make, so it cannot miss a load that exists, and among the ways of reaching a weight it returns the one using the fewest discs.
Almost always the collars. IPF rules require them and specify 2.5 kg each, so they add 5 kg to every lift in competition, and a total worked out without them will be short by exactly that on meet day. Set them to none if your gym uses spring clips instead.
Three of them are in the rules: 25 kg is red, 20 kg is blue and 15 kg is yellow. Everything at 10 kg and below is left as any colour by the rulebook, so those are drawn neutral here rather than given a shade this site invented for the sake of a prettier picture.
It reports the nearest achievable total in either direction and states which side of your target it fell on. When a target sits exactly halfway between two loadable weights, it resolves downward, on the reasoning that an unexpectedly heavy bar is the more expensive surprise of the two.
Add them to the pair counts and they enter the search like any other size. Half and quarter kilogram discs shrink the smallest jump to one kilogram or half of one, which is the whole point of owning them, and the reported step size updates to show the finer resolution you have bought.
