Distance is steps multiplied by step length, and everything above is that one multiplication read forwards or backwards. A step is one footfall; a stride is two, being one full cycle of the gait, so the stride figure is always double the step figure. Watches and phones count footfalls, so a step length is what you want here, not a stride length.
Your step length is not one number. It stretches when you hurry, shortens on stairs, on sand, uphill, in heavy boots and when you are tired, and a calibration walked briskly on a flat corridor will overstate a day spent pottering around a supermarket. Walk the test the way you usually walk, and measure a second time for running if you want a running figure. This is why the tool asks for a walk rather than offering to guess from your height: height cannot tell you any of that, and the guess it produces is one number pretending to be all of them.
The target on the front of every fitness app began life in 1965, when the Japanese firm Yamasa put a pedometer on sale called the manpo-kei — literally, the ten-thousand-step meter. It was a product name chosen because the character for ten thousand looks good and the number is easy to remember, in a country newly enthusiastic about walking after the Tokyo Olympics. No study produced it. Whatever the right daily figure turns out to be, a step count is a count of footfalls, and turning one into a distance needs one thing the pedometer never knew: how far you personally travel per step.
Find something you can measure without arguing with yourself. A tape run down a hallway, a straight of a running track, a marked lane in a car park. Twenty metres is plenty; longer is better, because a miscount of one step matters less the further you go.
Then walk it the way you normally walk. Not a demonstration stride, not a dawdle — the pace you use crossing a supermarket. Count every foot that lands, divide the distance by the count, and you have a step length that belongs to you.
A step is one footfall to the next. A stride is a full cycle of the gait, left heel to left heel, and it is exactly two steps. Half the confusion in stride-length tables comes from authors using the two words interchangeably, which puts a clean factor of two into the answer. Watches, phones and pedometers all count footfalls, so a step length is what you want here, and the stride figure shown alongside is simply double it.
Satellite tracking is the better tool outdoors and nobody should pretend otherwise. But it is useless on a treadmill, hopeless indoors, and absent entirely from the phone that spent the day in a coat pocket recording nothing but footfalls.
Those are the situations this converter is for: a day at a conference, an afternoon in a warehouse, a wet hour on a machine in a gym. A calibrated step length turns a bare count from those days into a distance you can put next to your outdoor weeks and compare honestly.

Walk the test at your genuinely ordinary pace, and if you want a figure for running, measure a separate one while running. Two calibrations cover almost everything most people do.
Twenty metres works and fifty is better. The longer the calibration, the less a single miscounted footfall distorts the division, and the more chance you have of settling into your normal rhythm before the end.
Because height is one of many things that set step length, and not the strongest. Leg proportion, walking speed, terrain, footwear and fitness all move it, and a multiplier on standing height captures none of them for the individual it is applied to.
No, and the gap is large. Running lengthens the step considerably, and it lengthens further as you speed up, so a walking calibration applied to a run will undercount distance by a wide margin. Measure a running one separately.
A GPS watch measures the ground it covered and is usually closer for outdoor distance. This tool is more useful indoors, on a treadmill, or when all you have is a step count and you want to know what it was worth.
