The hours are shown beside the money rather than folded into it, because they are a different kind of cost and only you can price them. Thirty minutes each way, four days a week, thirty weeks is 120 hours — three working weeks — and it never appears on anybody’s budget because nobody sends an invoice for it. It is usually the figure that decides how far out is too far.
Passes are multiplied by the months you are billed, not the months you attend, which is why a term-time commuter on an annual ticket pays for a summer of travel they never take. Fares, fuel prices and permits differ everywhere and none are built in; a per-mile rate lets you fold running costs into the driving line rather than pretending fuel is the whole of it.
The fare, the permit and the fuel are easy to add up and everybody does. The hours are harder to see, because nobody invoices for them, and they are frequently the larger cost: an hour each way over a full teaching year runs past four hundred hours, or ten working weeks spent sitting still. Both are calculated here, and the hours become money only if you ask.
That reticence is deliberate. Time on a bus with a book is not time somebody offered to pay you for, and multiplying every travelling hour by a wage produces a number that is technically enormous and practically meaningless. The hours are worth seeing in their own units first.
Real journeys have joints in them, so this one is entered as three: eight minutes walking to the stop, twenty-seven on the bus, six more walking at the far end. Forty-one minutes door to door, one way. The pass costs $68 a month and is paid for ten months of the year, so the money side is $680 — and both walks cost nothing while still counting fully towards the time.
Going in four days a week for thirty weeks is 240 journeys a year. That is $2.83 a journey, $5.67 for each day on campus, five and a half hours a week, and 164 hours across the year — just under seven complete days, or ten and a quarter waking ones. The bus fare is the only line anybody would have thought to add up, and it is the smaller half of what the journey takes.
This is where an honest total separates from a hopeful one. A monthly pass is charged for every month it is held, including the ones where you attend nothing, so an annual ticket bought for convenience in September is still costing money in July. The tool multiplies a monthly price by the months you pay for rather than the weeks you travel, which is why that field exists at all.
The same logic catches a permit sold by the academic year and a rail card with a fixed term. If a term-time-only pass exists, entering the shorter number shows at once what the quiet months were costing.
A car entered as fuel alone will always win a comparison it should not. Tyres, servicing, depreciation and the share of insurance attributable to the journey are all real, which is why reimbursement rates published by tax authorities sit several times above the pure fuel cost per mile. Entering a per-mile rate rather than a fuel price is the way to capture that: put in a rate you believe, give the distance one way, and the tool doubles it for the return trip.
Parking belongs on its own line, charged by the day, and so does anything paid per journey such as a toll or a bridge. Keeping them separate means the breakdown tells you which part of driving is expensive, which is usually not the part people expect.
The hours are the figure that should influence where you live, and they compare directly against rent. If moving closer costs $80 a month more and removes forty minutes a day, you have both sides: the fare you stop paying and the hours you get back. Some of that time is genuinely usable — reading, sleeping, messaging — which is why a train seat is worth more than a driving seat. Time standing on a platform in the rain is not usable at all, and deserves counting separately.
Look at the hours first and price them second, if at all. A rate is useful for comparing two options against each other, but treating every travelling hour as lost wages overstates the case badly for anyone who reads or works on the way.
Use a per-mile rate covering fuel, tyres, servicing and wear, with the distance one way, and add parking as a separate daily line. Insurance and tax are usually paid whether you commute or not, so include only the share the journey causes.
Add the extra return trip as its own leg, or raise the days on campus to account for it. The tool assumes one round trip per campus day, which is what most timetables produce once travelling home between lectures stops being appealing.
Usually on money, once a bike is bought: servicing, lights, a lock and occasional repairs are small annual figures. Enter them as a yearly cost, and remember that a cycled leg often beats a bus leg on time as well over shorter distances.
