$5.47 for the whole batch
Two different totals are useful and people confuse them. The batch cost is the value of what actually went in — $5.47 here. The shopping trip is what you hand over at the till if you own none of it, because a 1 kg bag is sold whole even when the recipe wants 250 g; the difference stays in the cupboard and gets used by the next thing you cook.
Units convert through the same table the rest of the site uses, so grams against kilograms, ounces against pounds, and teaspoons against litres are all exact. Weight and volume are deliberately not bridged. Not counted: electricity or gas for the oven, salt, pepper and oil you never measure, and anything that goes in the bin as trimmings.
That mismatch is the whole difficulty in pricing a dish. Almost nothing is sold in the quantity a recipe asks for: flour comes in bags, milk in bottles, eggs by the dozen, vanilla in a bottle you will still be working through next year. Pricing a meal means taking a fraction of each pack, and the fraction is only obvious when the pack and the recipe use the same unit. Here every line carries its own pack unit and its own used unit, and the conversion between them is exact.
Six lines, priced against the shelf: 250 g of flour from a $2.40 kilo bag is a quarter of it, $0.60. Two hundred grams of sugar from a $1.80 kilo bag is $0.36. Two hundred grams of butter from a 250 g pack costing $3.20 is four fifths of it, $2.56. Three eggs from a dozen at $4.20 is a quarter, $1.05.
The two awkward ones are where the units stop matching. A cup of milk out of a 2 litre bottle at $2.60 is 0.2366 litres, which is 11.83% of the bottle and $0.31. Two teaspoons of vanilla out of a 100 ml bottle at $6.00 is 9.86 ml, so 9.86% and $0.59 — the most expensive spoonful on the list by a distance.
That totals $5.47 for the batch. Across twelve servings it is $0.46 each; split four ways it is $1.37 a head. Both numbers are worth having, and they answer different questions.
The $5.47 above is the value of what went into the bowl. If you own none of it the till total is different: you cannot buy a quarter of a bag of flour or two teaspoons of vanilla, so the trip costs $20.20 and $14.73 of that stays in the cupboard. Which figure matters depends on why you are asking. Comparing a home-cooked meal against a takeaway wants the batch cost; deciding whether to attempt a recipe with six ingredients you do not own wants the shopping trip.
For anything you are selling — a bake sale, a market stall, a supper club — the batch cost is the one that goes into a price, and the leftovers are stock rather than loss.
Weight and volume are not bridged. If a pack is priced by the kilo and the recipe asks for millilitres, the line reports a mismatch instead of a price, because converting between them needs the density of that specific ingredient — a cup of honey and a cup of oats have nothing in common by weight. Also outside the total: the electricity or gas to run the oven, the salt, pepper and oil nobody measures, and the trimmings that go in the bin. Waste is the largest of those in practice, so treat the answer as a floor.
Price by serving rather than by head. If six people share a batch of twelve and one takes three portions, charge everyone the per-serving figure times what they took. Dividing the batch cost evenly only works when the portions were even.
Use the pack you bought, including any offer price. The point of the calculation is what this meal cost you, not what it might have cost. Re-run it with a different pack price to see what switching brands would save across a batch.
Choose the "each" unit on both sides — pack size 12 and amount 3 for three eggs from a dozen. It behaves like any other unit but only converts to itself, which is correct: half an egg is not a measurement anyone uses.
Because concentrated flavourings are expensive per millilitre and cheap per bottle, so the true cost hides. Two teaspoons in the example is 59 cents against 35 cents for one egg. Pricing every line is the only way that shows up.
